In 1998, we delivered our educational services in multi-age, multi-level classrooms around a “one-room schoolhouse” model. One teacher and an instructional assistant taught students with an emphasis on core curriculum and accelerated academics. In 2001, John Wood Charter School expanded to a community-based school located in south San Antonio (closed in 2004) and to the Hays County Juvenile Detention Center in San Marcos. The “charter school” also changed its name to The John H. Wood, Jr. Public Charter District in order to reflect the multiple campuses and expanding type of students served. In 2004, the district expanded once again to another residential facility located in San Antonio, the Huebner Road campus. With new leadership in 2007 came new directions and renewed growth. The district added detention center campuses in Granbury, Texas (2007) and Rockdale, Texas (2008). ![]() We currently have approximately 425 students. We have also shifted instructional techniques to include certified teachers in all core subject areas, a physical education program at each campus, computer labs, as well as SmartBoards and digital projectors in every classroom. Our district also has a robust technology component that includes wireless laptops for all professional staff, C-SCOPE curriculum, eSped’s special education manager, STAR Math and STAR Reading assessments for monitoring student progress every 90 days, and A+ Learning System’s computer-based instruction. We also added video conferencing and distance learning capabilities to each campus in the spring of 2009. ![]()
